Our Commitment to Product Safety
At Bubs & Mums, we stock kids furniture, wooden toys and nursery products from carefully selected suppliers who share our commitment to safety, sustainability and quality. We do not stock any product unless we are confident it meets or exceeds the relevant Australian safety standards.
Below is a guide to what we stock, how it is tested, and what that means for your child.
We deliberately choose products made from plantation-grown timber and finished with non-toxic, child-safe materials — a choice that is better for your child and a more responsible one for the environment. Where products carry FSC certification from the Forest Stewardship Council, this is noted individually on the relevant product pages.

Kids Tables, Chairs, Classroom & Preschool Furniture
Our kids furniture range — including wooden table and chair sets, classroom and preschool furniture, storage and outdoor furniture — comes from an Australian-owned supplier with over 20 years of experience designing and manufacturing products specifically for children and early learning environments.
Products in this range undergo rigorous testing to meet or exceed Australian and international safety standards, including AS/NZS ISO 8124, ASTM-F963 (US) and EN 71 (EU). AS/NZS ISO 8124 is the Australian and New Zealand standard for children’s product safety — covering structural integrity, sharp edges, stability and material safety.
The supplier also holds ISO 9001 Quality Assurance certification, meaning their entire manufacturing and quality control process is independently audited and verified — not just the finished products themselves.
Our supplier independently tests the timber and adhesives used in their products — going beyond what most manufacturers are required to test for. Over 80% of the colour range uses non-toxic, food-grade dyes. You can be confident in safe, durable and reliable products for your child.
🌳
Plantation-grown timber
All furniture is made from sustainably sourced plantation rubberwood, acacia and similar hardwoods — chosen for their durability, strength and lower environmental footprint compared to old-growth timber.
🎨
Non-toxic, food-grade dyes
Over 80% of the colour range uses non-toxic, food-grade dyes and child-safe sealants — independently tested and safe even if a child mouths the product.
🏫
Trusted by childcare centres
Our kids furniture is used in early learning environments, preschools and childcare centres across Australia — chosen by educators who require the highest safety standards.

- AS/NZS ISO 8124 — Australian & NZ standard
- ASTM-F963 — US safety standard
- EN 71 — European safety standard
- ISO 9001 — Quality assurance certified
What does AS/NZS ISO 8124 cover?
AS/NZS ISO 8124 is the Australian and New Zealand safety standard for children’s products. It covers physical and mechanical safety (sharp edges, small parts, structural stability), flammability, and migration of harmful chemical elements including lead and cadmium. Products in our furniture range are sourced from a supplier whose products are tested to this standard and confirmed to meet its requirements.
Is the furniture safe for childcare centres and preschools?
Yes — our kids and preschool furniture is tested to meet or exceed Australian, US and European safety standards and is actively used in early learning environments across Australia. It meets the safety requirements for regulated childcare facilities.
Are the paints and finishes safe for children?
Yes. Over 80% of the colour range uses non-toxic, food-grade dyes — independently tested for harmful substances including heavy metals. All sealants used are child-safe.
What is plantation timber and why does it matter?
Plantation timber is grown in regulated, managed forests rather than from old-growth or native forests. Rubberwood is a particularly sustainable choice — it comes from rubber trees at the end of their latex-producing life, giving the wood a second purpose. Using plantation timber reduces pressure on natural forests and ensures the supply chain is traceable and controlled.
Kids Furniture & Preschool Equipment
Wooden Toys, Musical Instruments & Creative Play Sets
Our wooden educational toys, puzzles, games, musical instruments and creative play sets are sourced from Australian suppliers who specialise in quality wooden and educational toys. When selecting products, children’s development and safety are the main priorities — and we only stock products we are confident meet Australian toy safety requirements.
All wooden toys in this range go through stringent testing procedures before they are sold, and are made to comply with Australia’s regulations for child safety. Our suppliers work exclusively with manufacturers who use regulated plantation timbers and child-safe, non-toxic paints in their production processes.
All paints used across this range are tested independently — separately from structural safety testing — to specifically confirm their non-toxic content before any product is cleared for sale.
✅Some products in this range are also tested to additional international standards — including AS/NZS ISO 8124 (Australia/NZ), ASTM-F963 (US) and EN 71 (EU), with ISO 9001 Quality Assurance certification covering the manufacturing process. Where this applies, it is noted on the individual product page.
🪵
Plantation-grown timber
All wooden toys are made from regulated plantation timbers — rubberwood, beech, birch, pine and others — responsibly grown and harvested. No old-growth timber is used in this range.
🖌️
Child-safe, non-toxic paints
Our suppliers test the paints and finishes used in this range to verify their non-toxic content — a separate process from structural safety testing.
🌱
Responsible sourcing
All timber is sourced from plantation forests, not old-growth timber. Selected products in this range carry FSC certification from the Forest Stewardship Council — look for the FSC label on individual product pages.
✅
Stringent testing procedures
All designs and materials go through testing before products go to market. Products are made to comply with Australian toy safety regulations, with some carrying additional international certifications.
- Tested to Australian toy safety regulations
- Child-safe, non-toxic paints — independently verified
- Some products: AS/NZS ISO 8124, ASTM-F963, EN 71
- Regulated plantation timber
- FSC certified — selected products (individually labelled)
Are the wooden toys safe for babies and toddlers?
Yes — all wooden toys in this range use child-safe, non-toxic paints independently tested before sale. Products designed for younger children are assessed for age-appropriate safety including small parts, rounded edges and safe finishes. All products are clearly labelled with age recommendations.
Some products mention additional international certifications — what does that mean?
Some wooden toys in our range are sourced from suppliers with additional international certifications, including AS/NZS ISO 8124 (the Australian and New Zealand children’s product safety standard), ASTM-F963 (the US Consumer Product Safety standard) and EN 71 (the European toy safety standard). Where a product has been tested to these additional standards, this is noted on the individual product page.
How do I know the paints are non-toxic?
The paints used across this range are independently tested separately from structural safety testing — specifically to verify their non-toxic content. This means both the product structure and the paint finishes are confirmed safe through separate testing processes before any product is cleared for sale.
Which products carry FSC certification?
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification applies to specific products that have been individually certified and labelled. Look for the FSC label on individual product pages — it is not a blanket claim across the entire wooden toys range. All products in the range, regardless of FSC status, use regulated plantation timber from managed forests.
What is plantation timber and why does it matter?
Plantation timber is grown in regulated, managed forests — meaning the entire supply chain from growing to harvesting is controlled and monitored. Rubberwood comes from rubber trees after their latex-producing life ends, making it one of the most sustainable hardwoods available. Beech and birch are dense hardwoods known for their smooth grain and strength. None of the timber used in this range comes from old-growth forests.
Nursery Furniture & Mattresses
Cots, Bassinets, Mattresses & Nursery Furniture
Our nursery range — including cots, co-sleeper cradles, bassinets, mattresses and change pads — comes from an Australian nursery furniture specialist that has been supplying Australian families and childcare centres since 1988. Safety is not just a standard they meet — it is the foundation of everything they design.
All products in this nursery range meet and often exceed the relevant Australian Standards. The supplier strives to be a leader in best practice — including following non-mandatory guidelines and directions from expert regulators, not just mandatory requirements alone.
All timber used in nursery furniture is plantation-grown New Zealand timber — no toxic chemicals, low VOC finishes, and sustainably sourced. These are choices made for your baby’s health and for the planet.
Safety standards by product type:
| Product | Safety standard | What it means for your baby |
|---|
| Cots | AS/NZS 2172:2010 Australian Standard for Domestic Use Cots | Independently tested by AFRDI-Furntech — a NATA-accredited facility and the same lab referenced by the ACCC. Also complies with Consumer Goods (Infant Sleep Products) Safety Standard 2024. |
| Co-sleeper cradles & bassinets | EN 1130-1 & EN 1130-2 European children’s furniture standard | Covers structural integrity, entrapment hazards and stability. There is currently no mandatory Australian standard for bassinets — EN 1130 is the internationally recognised standard used to verify bassinet safety. |
| Mattresses | AS/NZS 8811.1:2013 Sleep Surface Test for Firmness | The supplier was the first Australian brand to work with the Queensland Government to review this standard. All mattresses in our nursery range are sourced from a supplier whose products comply with this standard. |
| Change pads | EN 71 + ASTM F2388-21 Infant Product Safety Test | BPA, Phthalates and PVC free. Made from high-density PU foam with low VOC, no latex and no fire retardant chemicals. |
| All nursery furniture paint | AS/NZS 8124:2012 Mandatory paint safety standard | All paint finishes on nursery furniture are water-based and non-toxic, tested to the mandatory Australian paint safety standard. |
😴
No foam in mattresses
Mattresses use thermally bonded fibre — no foam, no formaldehyde, no fire retardants, no chemical binders. Foam mattresses can emit harmful chemicals; this range eliminates that risk entirely.
🧪
OEKO-TEX Class I certified
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I is the strictest level of textile certification — specifically for products in contact with children under 3, testing for over 100 harmful substances including pesticides, heavy metals and formaldehyde.
🇦🇺
Australian childcare trusted
This nursery range has been the number one supplier to Australian childcare centres since 1988 — chosen by early childhood professionals who require the most rigorous safety standards.
🏥
AFRDI-Furntech tested
Cots are tested by AFRDI-Furntech, a NATA-accredited facility — the same independent lab referenced by the ACCC in product safety assessments. This is the gold standard for cot testing in Australia.
Why is a firm mattress safer for babies?
Medical experts recommend firm mattresses for infants because soft mattresses can cause a baby’s respiratory passages to compress, making it harder to breathe — which may result in suffocation. Australian Standard AS/NZS 8811.1:2013 specifically tests for firmness, and all mattresses in our nursery range comply with this standard.
What is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I?
OEKO-TEX is an independent worldwide testing and certification system for textile products. Standard 100 Class I is the strictest of four certification classes — it applies specifically to babies and children under 3, testing for over 100 harmful substances including pesticides, heavy metals and formaldehyde. It is the highest level of assurance available for baby textiles.
Is there an Australian standard for bassinets?
Currently there is no mandatory Australian standard specifically for bassinets. However, EN 1130-1 and EN 1130-2 is the internationally recognised European children’s furniture standard — covering structural integrity, entrapment hazards and stability. Our bassinets and co-sleeper cradles are tested to this standard, which is considered best practice in the absence of a mandatory Australian equivalent.
Are the change pads safe for newborns?
Yes — our change pads are BPA, Phthalates and PVC free, with low VOC and no fire retardant chemicals. They are tested to EN 71 infant product safety standard and ASTM F2388-21, covering the safety of materials in contact with infants. There is no incline (safer for newborns) and no ties or belts that could present a strangulation hazard.
What does NATA-accredited mean?
NATA stands for the National Association of Testing Authorities — the Australian government body that formally recognises testing facilities as competent to carry out specific types of testing. AFRDI-Furntech, who independently test our nursery cots, is a NATA-accredited facility, giving their test results the highest level of credibility in Australia.
