Kids Table and Chair Height Guide by Age

Getting the height right

Choose furniture by the child’s measurements, not age alone. The right setup allows their feet to rest flat on the floor, their knees to remain close to a right angle and the tabletop to sit around elbow height.

The chart below covers common table and chair heights for toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children. It can be used for home playrooms, family day care, kindergartens and childcare centres.

Quick reference: which size for which age

Chair seat heightTypically suitsPair with table height
25 cmToddlers, around 1–3 years45 cm
28.5 cmAround 2–4 years50 cm
30 cmAround 3–6 years, kinder rooms50 cm
40 cmSchool-age childrenStudy desk (see below)

Ages are a guide, not a rule — children of the same age vary considerably. If you’re between sizes, measure a child who sits in the middle of your group rather than the tallest or shortest.

Aim for a 20–25 cm gap between seat and tabletop. That’s the range QToys, our furniture supplier, recommends — enough for children to rest their forearms comfortably without raising their shoulders.

Table heights and sizes

Almost all our tables are 50 cm high, which pairs correctly with both our 28.5 cm and 30 cm chairs. Our toddler sets use a lower 45 cm table to match the 25 cm chair.

Common tabletop sizes in our range:

Shape and sizeDimensionsSeats comfortably
Square60 × 60 cm2–4 children
Square58 × 58 cm2–4 children
Round70 × 70 cm4 children
Round90 × 90 cm4–6 children
Rectangular120 × 60 cm4–6 children
Rectangular119 × 58 cm4–6 children

We also stock a Square Low Table at 28 cm high for floor-level play, where children sit on cushions rather than chairs — popular in Montessori-inspired and infant rooms.

Study desks for older children

Once a child has outgrown the standard table-and-chair sets, a study desk is the better fit. Our Teen Desk stands at 70 cm high — designed, in the maker’s words, for a child who’s too big for a children’s table but not yet comfortable at an adult desk. It measures 90 × 60 × 70 cm, includes a built-in stationery drawer, and suits primary-school-age children setting up a study corner at home.

These desks sit slightly apart from our classroom range — they’re built for individual study at home rather than group settings — but they’re the natural next step for a growing child. Pair one with a taller chair for a comfortable working height.

Planning a room

A few things worth thinking about before you order:

Buy two heights, not one compromise. If your room spans a wide age range, two chair heights will serve children better than a single middle size that suits neither end.

Count the chairs, not the tables. Work out how many children need to be seated at once, then choose table sizes that accommodate them. Six children at one large round table often works better than two crowded squares.

Leave room to move. Allow space for children to push chairs back and get in and out independently — a table wedged against a wall creates a bottleneck at pack-up time.

Think about stacking. If your room doubles as a sleep space or gets reconfigured through the day, stacking chairs save considerable floor space.
